On Tuesday, April 20, the Cabinet of Ministers supported amendments to the Law on the Management of the Spread of COVID-19 Infection, extending the period until which foreign nationals can re-apply for or re-register a residence permit upon presentation of an expired travel document.
Epidemiological safety measures and travel restrictions related to limiting the spread of Covid-19 infection remain in force even after the end of the emergency situation, and it is regulated by Cabinet Regulation of 9 June 2020 No. 360 “Epidemiological Safety Measures for the Containment of the Spread of COVID-19 Infection”. As a result, foreign nationals still face difficulties in obtaining travel documents. These amendments to the law have been made to address this issue.
Currently, the above-mentioned Regulations No. 360 still do not provide the right to enter the Republic of Latvia to foreigners who have been granted or wish to apply for a temporary residence permit. Therefore, it is planned to extend the validity of the decision for certain categories of persons - foreigners, for whom it would not be possible to renew the permit as a result of voiding a permit.
