What is a diplomatic passport?
The diplomatic passport approves its holder the official representative of the Republic of Latvia in foreign countries. The diplomatic passport is issued to the citizens of the Republic of Latvia, and it is the property of the state. The law “On diplomatic passports” regulates the issue and the control procedures of the diplomatic passports.
How and where to obtain the diplomatic passport?
The diplomatic passports are issued, extended and registered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia.
Who is issued the diplomatic passport?
- President of the State;
- Parliament deputies;
- Prime Minister, ministers, ministers of the state;
- Persons duly authorised by the Parliament or the President of the State to represent the Republic of Latvia in foreign countries;
- Persons duly authorised by the Cabinet of Ministers to represent the government of Latvia in foreign countries;
- Persons of the diplomatic and consular service staff;
- Spouse (husband / wife) and under-aged children of the employee of the diplomatic and consular service, if they are residing together in the country the diplomatic and consular services are rendered for an indefinite period of time;
- Persons, who according with the law are entitled to represent the Republic of Latvia in foreign countries.
What to do if the passport is lost?
If the diplomatic passport is lost, stolen or destroyed, the person must immediately inform the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia, but in foreign countries – the Diplomatic or Consular Representative Office of Latvia. Upon investigation of the case, the Representative Office is co-operation with the Ministry of Interior of Republic of Latvia issues temporary person’s identification card as a substitute to the lost, stolen or destroyed diplomatic passport.
