A person shall lose the status of a stateless person in the Republic of Latvia if he or she has obtained the citizenship of Latvia or any other state.

If a person fails to renounce the status of a stateless person in accordance with the procedure prescribed by law, or if he or she has provided false information and thus in accordance with the provisions of the Law on Stateless Persons and the 28 September 1954 Convention Relating to the Status of Stateless Persons has obtained the status of a stateless person unjustifiably, he or she shall be deprived of a stateless person status.

Necessary documents:

1) an application:

2) travel document of the stateless person;

3) a document certifying the acquisition of citizenship of another state.

Where to submit documents?

Documents may be submitted:

  1. by means of a secure electronic signature, by sending to e-mail pmlp@pmlp.gov.lv, by attaching an application signed with a secure electronic signature and copies of identity documents;
  2. electronically by using the official service eAddress
  3.  by post to the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs to address: Čiekurkalna 1.līnija 1, k-3, Rīga, LV-1026.

Important!

An application on renunciation of the status of a stateless person on behalf of a minor shall be submitted by parents of this person or his or her legal representative. If a minor has attained the age of 15 years, then his or her written consent shall be required in order to renounce the status of a stateless person.

Should it be necessary to verify the legal force of the original document or correctness of a document derivative, the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs may at any time request that the original document be produced.

 

How long the documents submitted are reviewed?

A decision shall be taken within one month after the day on which the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs received all the required documents.

What are further possibilities of staying in the Republic of Latvia for the person, who has renounced the status of a stateless person?

If a person wants to continue to permanently stay in the Republic of Latvia and he or she has renounced the status of a stateless person in accordance with the procedure laid down in the law, he or she shall be entitled to request a residence permit.
